A weight loss study from WFU’s Health and Exercise Science (HES) Department featured prominently on Good Morning America.  Dr. Steve Messier led the study, which looks at weight loss and joint pain. Specifically, the study suggests that a 20% weight loss can reduce joint pain by up to 25% in obese people with one of the most common joint disorders. Furthermore, the study suggests that even smaller losses in weight can help.  For example, a 5% loss of starting body weight can lead to improvement in pain, mobility, and inflammatory markers.
